Artist-in-Residences
adventures in Art / Institute of Contemporary Art
Adventures in Art is a semi-annual workshop in which students from Hall Elementary School, in grades 1-5th, collaborate with the students from the Maine College of Art (MECA) Art Education Department to explore and respond to artwork exhibited in the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). “The World Over”, recently on display in the ICA, is a MECA faculty exhibition comprised of artwork executed through diverse mediums and disciplines. A piece of artwork, by Colleen Kinsella and Elizabeth Jabar, served as an inspiration for this year’s workshop to encourage conversations about personal narratives in art, specifically in printmaking. Reflecting upon the breadth and depth of the contemplative issues and social constructs present in Jabar and Kinsella’s work, the MECA Art Education Students collaborated to create presentations that would educate students on the practice of relief printmaking and invite them into conversation through which they could share their own personal stories and experiences. In the week prior to Thanksgiving, the MECA students visited the Hall School to deliver their presentation and instruct the children on how to make four different Styrofoam relief plates depicting images of elements, transportation, people and home to be used as a lexicon for their printmaking
narratives. Each class from the Hall School had an opportunity to visit the ICA and engage in dialogue about the pieces in the show through a game called “Token Response”. Following the visit to the ICA, the Hall School students printed their relief plates on 22 muslin banners that was on display at the Hall School.
